The Virginia men’s soccer team lost 1-0 in overtime at Notre Dame Sunday night in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Fighting Irish (11-6-3) scored as time expired in the first period of overtime on only their second shot on goal of the game. Junior midfielder Tommy McCabe lofted a ball into the box for one last chance before the second overtime period, which freshman forward Jack Lynn headed past Virginia (10-4-3) junior goalkeeper Marcel Dasilva.
The two teams had few scoring chances throughout the match, as Virginia only put three shots on target, while Notre Dame had two. The two ACC foes drew 0-0 in their regular-season meeting.
Virginia freshman midfielder Daniel Steedman spent several minutes on the ground with an injury late in the second half, and was replaced by senior forward Simeon Okoro, who returned to the field after starting the match.
With 11:35 to play in the second half, Virginia freshman forward Daryl Dike played a through ball to Okoro, who beat Notre Dame junior goalkeeper Duncan Turnbull but put his shot wide.
In the 80th minute, a free kick was given to Notre Dame after the referee issued Virginia freshman defender Aboubacar Keita a yellow card. Dasilva struggled to handle the ball from Notre Dame senior forward Thomas Ueland and appeared to fall over the goal line holding it.
The ball bounced loose and Notre Dame freshman forward Mohamed Omar put it in the back of the net, but the referee ruled that Dasilva had possession of the ball and it was knocked loose by Omar.
Dasilva was making the second start of his Virginia career, as sophomore goalkeeper Colin Shutler, who started every regular season match for the Cavaliers, was out injured.
The Cavaliers had the last major chance of regulation with about a minute and a half to go, when junior midfielder Aaron James struck a long range shot from outside the box that sailed wide of the goal.
Nine of the 11 players who started against Notre Dame will be eligible to play for Virginia next season, as only Okoro and senior defender Prosper Figbe will graduate.
The Fighting Irish advance to play at Indiana Friday.
