The Virginia baseball team (15-10, 5-4 ACC) won 5-1 against Richmond (11-9-1, 0-0-0 A10) at Disharoon Park Wednesday. The Cavaliers finished their six-game homestand with a perfect record.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Blake Bales, normally a relief pitcher, made his first start of the season on the mound for Virginia, going two innings and allowing one run on one hit with three walks.
Richmond took a 1-0 lead against Bales in the top of the second on an RBI groundout.
However, the Cavaliers rebounded to go up 2-1 in the bottom of the inning. Freshman second baseman Nic Kent hit a single to score junior left fielder Cayman Richardson, then sophomore shortstop Tanner Morris hit a ground-rule double, driving in senior catcher Cameron Comer.
Virginia scored their remaining three runs in the bottom of the fourth, two of which came in on a single to right field by senior center fielder Cameron Simmons.
Senior right-handed pitcher Grant Donahue got the win on the mound for Virginia — his first of the year — giving the Cavaliers three innings of scoreless relief while surrendering only three hits.
The Cavaliers will now take to the road for a three-game weekend series at North Carolina State. First pitch from Doak Field in Raleigh will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 1 p.m. Sunday.
