This is a developing story

A construction worker at the U.Va. Contemplative Commons project site died Tuesday after falling from the west connector bridge to the Ridley Building. The worker was transported to the U.Va. Medical Center for treatment where he later died.

Hourigan, the construction firm overseeing the project, has notified the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Both Hourigan and OSHA will be conducting a thorough investigation of the accident. The OSHA investigation began on Wednesday and no further details have been announced.

President of Hourigan Group Bryan Jones said Hourigan is fully cooperating with investigators and actively communicating with the University.

“The entire Hourigan team extends our deepest condolences to the family and friends who lost a loved one, as well as all workers who were impacted by this unfortunate incident,” Jones said in an email statement to The Cavalier Daily.

The Contemplative Commons is a current construction site on Grounds located between Bavaro Hall and the Dell Pond. The 57,000-square foot building is expected to be completed in the fall 2023 semester.

University spokesperson Brian Coy said the University’s hearts are with the family and friends who lost a loved one in this incident.

“Keeping University employees and contractors safe on the job is a core value here at U.Va. and we are working with all of our construction partners to review this incident and apply what we learn to improve workplace safety going forward,” Coy said in an email statement to the Cavalier Daily.
