I’ll never forget how during move-in day my first year, my dad picked up a copy of The Cavalier Daily and handed it to me. As I skimmed through the print pages with him, an article about masking and vaccination requirements for students caught my eye. I was impressed by the breadth and scope of the paper, and promised myself I would look for The Cavalier Daily’s booth at the activities fair in the coming days. Four years later, I’m happy to report that my time at The Cavalier Daily has been a cornerstone of my University experience.

Ryan Odom stands close to the wall. Khakis. A V-Sabre quarter-zip. He is a khaki-and-quarter-zip guy this time of year, more of a joggers-and-sweatshirt guy come basketball season. In this video, Odom begins, after a second, to speak. What he’s saying is not the important part.

Before I even received my acceptance letter to the University of Virginia, I knew I wanted to be on The Cavalier Daily. I got into journalism during my senior year of high school, and was immediately hooked. My work saw me meeting new people, highlighting deserving stories and seeing the power of my words. The most rewarding feeling came each time I picked up a freshly printed newspaper and saw my name — Leon Arceo — boldly printed in black ink. I still remember when I visited Grounds for the first time in the summer leading to my first year, stopping in my tracks when I saw a dark blue newspaper box and telling my mother that my name would be in this paper. It became a dream to, one day, be able to tell people I was a member of the Cavalier Daily.

For my first ever article with The Cavalier Daily, I covered the 94th Academy Awards. I had never written anything outside of essays for school before, and I was eager to get my name on the website. At the time, the awards show had arguably not produced a buzz-generating moment since the 2017 Best Picture slip-up, and it was looking like that year’s show would be uneventful like the previous few. I figured the ceremony, which had lost some of its past intrigue and luster, would offer an easy and manageable introduction to event coverage so that I could soon move on to loftier pieces.

The University is tightening its belt. The University sent an email to all its employees March 25, including student employees, describing its new budgeting rules for the foreseeable future. Citing fiscal uncertainty caused by changing economic conditions and federal policies regarding universities, all staff hiring is now under a review process, which is effectively a freeze. Off-cycle promotions are halted. The University is now “committed to merit-based salary increases and bonuses.” While the University was quick to reassure recipients that they remain committed to maintaining a high quality of scholarship, the email sent to University employees seemed like an indication of a substantial cut in the future.
