As fourth-years’ time at the University comes to a close, some students are looking ahead and planning their future careers. Through support from mentors, alumni connections and Career Center resources, many fourth-years have endured the job application process and landed positions at law firms, investment banks and even abroad. However, uncertainties in the job market may inhibit a smooth job search process and career.

The University’s arts scene is a thriving one with student-run theater productions and a cappella concerts, coupled with film screenings, gallery shows, comedy nights and literary journals. This is, in no small part, a result of the passionate student artists on and around Grounds who bring it to life — not just as performers or creators, but as writers, editors and commentators.

Despite Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction, graduation weekend has arrived. From theater to media studies to even architecture, graduating arts students are soaking in their final days as University undergraduates, begging time to slow down, even considering graduate school to prolong their tenure in Charlottesville. Inevitably, however, after diplomas are received and caps tossed high above the Rotunda, these students must reckon with the ultimate question — what comes next after the University?

After a successful regular season, Virginia received its second consecutive NCAA Tournament bid for the first time in program history — a trip to Columbia, S.C. to take on North Florida, Elon and the host program, No. 8-seed South Carolina, in the NCAA Regionals. Scanning into venues has become a norm of the digital age. Fans wield the Ticketmaster app at the gates of JPJ, and moviegoers present a QR code to enter the Violet Crown. In recent years, the University has experienced a continuation of this trend with students scanning into parties using DoorList.

The Trump administration’s recent cuts to federal research funding have resulted in a loss of over $60 million in grants for the University. The reductions have affected multiple research projects, including those funded by agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and National Endowment for the Humanities. It is unclear how future allocations will be impacted.

Just under two months ago, a discouraged Virginia women’s lacrosse team walked off the field at Klöckner Stadium to the sound of the halftime buzzer. The score was 4-9 in favor of Duke, and although the Cavaliers (12-7, 5-4 ACC) had cut the deficit from six to five, it seemed an impossible task to complete the comeback.

For those who have not followed Virginia baseball this season, 2025 can be summarized pretty easily. The team was ranked No. 2 in the national preseason poll, proceeded to stumble into a heinously long absence from the rankings entirely and was on the verge of missing the postseason for the first time since 2019. Now, things have changed.

In most other seasons, Saturday’s thrilling walk-off victory would have taken the pressure off of a weekend. The win clinched the series against a red-hot Miami team, giving Virginia a second consecutive series win over a quality ACC opponent.

After a dynamic 6-1 victory in the series opener, Virginia looked to continue to build on its four-game winning streak in a crucial matchup against Miami Saturday afternoon. The No. 7 Virginia women’s tennis team saw its promising season come to a disappointing end Friday afternoon in a 4-0 loss to No. 10 Tennessee in the NCAA Championship Round of 16. At the Boar’s Head Resort in Charlottesville, in a rematch of a February meeting at ITA Indoors that Virginia won 4-2, the No. 10 Lady Vols turned the tables with a dominant performance to advance to the quarterfinals.

I used to think in black and white. I had strong opinions, a clear sense of what is right and the stubborn belief that my side was the correct side. Now, as I am getting ready to graduate, I am less sure of what I think. I am more reluctant to play the arbiter of good and bad. And I take pride in my ability to understand perspectives on many sides of an issue. This growth — or devolution, depending on who you ask — is, in part, due to my time with The Cavalier Daily.

Despite winning in the first round over No. 10 seed Louisville, No. 25 Virginia fell to No. 15 Clemson 7-4 in a quarterfinal matchup. The 7-seed Cavaliers (37-16, 14-10 ACC) endured the same result as last season’s matchup with the Tigers (42-12, 19-5 ACC), who earned the 2-seed, but Virginia’s lower seed gave it the opportunity to win its first ACC Championship game since 2011, a 3-2 walk-off win over the Cardinals (26-25, 9-15 ACC).
