Nine Cavalier track and field athletes competed at the Fred Hardy Invitational in Richmond on Friday. The Virginia unit was comprised of five freshmen, three sophomores and one junior.

On Saturday afternoon, the Cavalier track and field program hosted its first outdoor meet of 2015 — the Virginia Cup. Both the men and women’s teams enjoyed a great deal of success, with Virginia athletes winning 20 of 36 events against their in-state foes.

Six athletes from the Virginia men’s track and field team competed in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at the NCAA Indoor Championships over the weekend. At the end of competition, Virginia placed 23rd — the top finish among ACC schools.

At the ACC Track and Field Championships in Blacksburg, Virginia athletes laid the foundation for a winning program. The men’s team took third overall — tying its 2009 best — while the women’s side battled its way to a ninth-place finish out of fifteen ACC schools.

Eight track and field athletes represented Virginia in three separate events at the Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday in South Bend, Indiana. This meet — hosted by Notre Dame — offered the Cavaliers a final tune-up before next weekend’s ACC Indoor Championships. And perhaps more importantly, these Virginia athletes gained another opportunity to qualify for the NCCA Indoor Championships.

Select members of the Virginia track and field team competed in Boston, Massachusetts at the John Thomas Terrier Classic over the weekend. A number of East Coast schools participated in the meet in both field and running events, but the Cavaliers took part only in the latter.

When they arrived in Lexington, Kentucky last Friday, the Cavalier track and field team knew the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet would be a test. Results would speak to the team’s talent level in a pool of high-powered programs. When all was said and done, as spectators filed out of Nutter Field House, coach Bryan Fetzer and company saw a handful of Virginia athletes embrace the challenge and excel in their events.
