Although it lasted only a matter of seconds, the silence was deafening. The suspension of sound and movement lingered on the practice field until an emphatic declaration abruptly reestablished reality. “Keep playing!” the voice bellowed. The action on the pitch resumed, but it wasn’t until senior tri-captain Will Bates signaled “thumbs up” from the sideline where he clutched his bloodied nose that the palpable uneasiness dissipated. Moments earlier, Bates had been inadvertently struck square in the face when an errant rocket shot fired toward goal.

Men's soccer ties Boston College, guarantees winning record

The Virginia men’s soccer team earned a crucial point in the standings Friday, playing No. 22 Boston College to a scoreless draw in Newton, Massachusetts. The tie guarantees the Cavaliers (8-6-2, 2-4-1 ACC) a .500 or better record for the 32nd consecutive season and in doing so fulfills a major benchmark for the NCAA Tournament selection process. Both teams had dangerous scoring opportunities in the first period.

The Virginia men’s soccer team rallied back from a seemingly insurmountable second-half deficit to earn a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory against Virginia Tech Friday. The Cavaliers (8-6-1, 2-4 ACC) found themselves in a two-goal hole when freshman forward Kai Marshall tapped in his first collegiate score in the 56th minute to give Virginia Tech a 2-0 lead.

The Cavaliers (7-6-1, 1-4 ACC) come off a 3-2 win against Wright State Tuesday that served as an important rebound from an embarrassing 4-1 loss to Wake Forest at home late last week.

The Virginia men’s soccer team bounced back from Friday’s disappointing 4-1 loss to Wake Forest with a 3-2 victory Tuesday evening against non-conference foe Wright State. Despite the thin margin of victory, coach George Gelnovatch saw tangible signs of progress. “We’re going to take all the positives we can out of this game, which are three great goals,” Gelnovatch said.
