The Luminati

Gov. Bob McDonnell wants to get a lot of mileage out of higher education in Virginia. He has set the goal of producing 100,000 new college degrees by 2025, an initiative which reflects a national trend.

Homage to Salamanca

I want to take a moment to thank Sanjiv Tata for his insightful Mar. 14 opinion column, "Going above and abroad," concerning study overseas. I can recommend such study from my own personal experience.

Opinion

Tone deaf

The Managing Board succeeded in engaging The Cavalier Daily's reader base this weekend with its lead editorial "Loveless," but probably not as intended.

Opinion

Get out of my Face(book)!

Good news has just arrived for any University students who are seeking a job: Facebook will not allow potential employers to delve into your private lives through your profile.

Talk of the town

The gates of knowledge swung open, and it was a mad rush. Students were waiting for this - the return of Look Hoos Talking.

This past week, Israel passed legislation forbidding models with a body mass index under 18.5 to participate in fashion shows and advertisements.

A brand Newt strategy

The following monikers are the Secret Service code names of the only two Republican presidential candidates that I would like to see in the remainder of the Republican primary.

Please be seated

Anyone familiar with the numerous and sometimes tedious works of Karl Marx has come across his theory of surplus value, which says that under capitalism, the task of upper management is to find surplus values to exploit.

Electoral college

The new executives for the University Judiciary and Honor Committees - whose election results we have published this and last Monday - receive our attention and congratulations.

Barriers of communication

I am writing in response to Alexandra Osvath's March 21 guest viewpoint "To infinity and abroad." In her column, Osvath explains the University provides a number of excellent resources for studying abroad and frames her piece as a response to my own March 14 column.

Opinion

These things take time

I had intended to write this week about "Loveless," the lead editorial published last week about a fundraiser which apparently seemed to be - but now seems not to be - connected to the One Love Foundation, the charity formed to honor the memory of Yeardley Love, the University student and lacrosse player killed nearly two years ago.

Update: The Cavalier Daily printed an editorial in last Thursday's paper titled "Loveless," which criticized the scheduling of a bar night at Boylan Heights to raise money for the One Love Foundation, a charity established in honor of Yeardley Love.

Opinion

Immigrants

Illegal immigration is undoubtedly a rousing topic which has divided both our society and Congress. Anything associated with immigration seems to create controversy.

Memorial service

DEALING with the past is never easy. Whether this is on a personal, community or national scale, deciphering the past and prioritizing its lessons remains a challenge.

Operation desert norms

Along with the lunch served yesterday at the "Morality and Politics" panel at Garrett Hall, New York Times columnist David Brooks offered some preliminary, if bittersweet, intellectual hors d'oeuvres.

To infinity and abroad

I am writing in response to Sanjiv Tata's March 14 opinion column, "Going above and abroad." As a fourth-year student, returned study abroad participant and Peer Advisor in the International Study Office (ISO), I would like to bring attention to several incorrect statements in Tata's article. First of all, the University has a multitude of structured study abroad opportunities with more than 50 exchange partners and faculty-led programs worldwide.

Pardon the messenger

Invisible Children's Kony 2012 video, which took only days to become an Internet sensation, has elicited myriad comments and opinions since it was first posted in early March.

Opinion

A month-long celebration

In recent times Muslims have been one of the most misunderstood populations in the United States. During this election season we have seen prominent public figures make disparaging comments about the place of Muslims in U.S.

Opinion

An escalating discussion

Many people have begun to believe that military action between Iran and Israel is inevitable. This attitude is regrettable when one considers the number of very good reasons not to initiate a preventive strike on Iran.
