Getting Greed-y

This fall it was "Jeopardy." Now, it's time for "Greed."

Thursday, the new trivia game show "Greed" made an appearance on Grounds to recruit student contestants.

Second-year College student Jen Stamey was one of the University finalists selected for the show. She attended one of the two testing sessions held at Ruby Tuesday's restaurant March 30.

"I went to the 2 p.m. session. There must have been about 150 people there," Stamey said. She said all prospective contestants were divided into three sections to take a 20-question test.

The latter half were more difficult, she said.

"They had all these random questions like, 'Name three weapons used in fencing,'" she explained.

Stamey was one of eight in her group to be called back after the test as a semi-finalist.

  • "This woman came in to interview us. We each had one minute to talk. I guess they did that to get people with personality for the show," she said. Of this semi-finalist group, five students were selected, including Stamey.

Students who made the final cut to appear on "Greed" will receive phone calls April 10.

"They told us to sit by the phone that Monday. Whoever they call will go to L.A. for the show," she said.

Stamey has been interested in game shows for as long as she can remember. "I always watched Jeopardy and old game show reruns when I was younger," she said.

    Crew blazes past competition

Dragging themselves out of bed at 5:30 a.m. for early-morning practices was clearly a part of the formula for the success of the Virginia men's crew team.

This weekend, the crew team rowed its way to a first-place finish in varsity, junior varsity and novice (first-year) divisions at the Occoquan Sprints Tournament in Lorton, Virginia.

First-year students only can row as novices, while upperclassmen row on the junior varsity and varsity teams.

"I knew our team was good. I expected us to do pretty well, but I didn't expect us to sweep every race," first-year novice team member Eric White said.

With every entered boat taking home a gold metal, the crew team defeated schools like Bucknell, Duke, Williams and Virginia Tech.

"It was exhilarating to beat all those teams," White said.
