Before last season, following the graduation of star center DeMya Walker, you could have predicted gloom and doom for the Virginia women's basketball team. But the Cavaliers didn't listen and shocked a lot of people by winning the ACC regular season title and advancing to the Sweet 16 behind the play of ACC Rookie of the Year Schuye LaRue.
This season, LaRue and the Cavs won't be able to sneak up on anyone. Based heavily on expectations of a monster season from LaRue, the team was picked to finish second in the ACC. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Tipoff Club named LaRue as one of 30 preseason candidates for the Naismith College Women's Basketball Player of the Year Award, quite a rarity for a sophomore. However, she isn't paying any attention to her press clippings.
"I try not to think about it," LaRue said. "It doesn't really matter what the press thinks, but it motivates me to go out and work even harder in practice to try to get the team together like we were last year."
