Cav women fall to Longhorns in double overtime

After losing to Louisiana Tech in the semifinal of the Preseason NIT yesterday in West Lafayette, Ind., things didn't get any better for the Virginia women's basketball team yesterday in the consolation game. The No. 16 Cavs took Texas to double overtime, but lost 56-55 in a game characterized by poor shooting and constant lead changes.

Virginia shot only 30 percent and sunk just one of its nine three-point attempts. Shooting guard Telisha Quarles went 3-for-17 and missed a three at the end of the second overtime that could have won the game.

On the other end, Texas was even worse, making only 17 of its 68 attempts.

Center Schuye LaRue paced Virginia with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Chalois Lias added 14 points off the bench.

LaRue tied the game at 44 at the end of regulation with a layup with 2.2 seconds remaining.

Pink slips

Two of the ACC's most widely criticized football coaches were fired this week after failing to meet expectations. Maryland coach Ron Vanderlinden was dismissed Sunday after not bringing his team to a bowl. In Chapel Hill, N.C., UNC coach Carl Torbush was let go yesterday despite winning six games in his third season.

In the quarterfinals of the tournament, Zwarich set an ACC Championship single-match kill record by slamming 33 kills in a 3-1 win over Wake Forest. In Virginia's two matches of the tournament, Zwarich notched 44 kills, nine digs and seven blocks.
