Cav swimmer grabs ACC weekly honors

Freshman swimmer Luke Anderson has another award to add to his trophy collection after being named the ACC Men's Swimmer of the Week for his Saturday performance against North Carolina.

In Virginia's 139.5-103.5 victory, Anderson won two individual events and one relay. He won the 50-yard freestyle (20.46 seconds) and 100 free (44.95). Both times lowered his collegiate and team bests in the events for the season.

Anderson also swam the leadoff leg for the team's best 400 free relay time of the season, 3:01.80.

This is the second time Anderson has been recognized as the ACC Swimmer of the Week and the third time a Virginia swimmer has won this season.

Fellow Cavalier freshman Ian Prichard also was named the ACC Men's Swimmer of the Week in November.

Harper qualifies

Virginia basketball recruit Jermaine Harper has qualified academically to play in the NCAA, The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Thursday.

Harper, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound guard at Blue Ridge Prep in St. George, Va., learned of his qualifying score before Christmas, the Times-Dispatch said.

Harper currently averages 25 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals per game for Blue Ridge Prep.

Harper joins 6-8 forward Jason Clark of Hargrave Military Academy as the only two of Virginia's four basketball recruits to gain freshman eligibility. Clark already was eligible when he signed a national letter of intent in November.

The Times-Dispatch added that the Cavalier coaches are not worried about the eligibility of the other two recruits, 6-2 point guard Keith Jenifer, Clark's teammate at Hargrave, and 6-8 power forward Elton Brown of Warwick High in Newport News.

Virginia has one scholarship remaining for the 2001-02 season. Its primary targets, 7-footer DeSagana Diop and 6-8 power forward Ousmane Cisse, have said they will decide in the spring.

Harper and Blue Ridge will play Diop and Oak Hill Academy Feb. 3 at University Hall.
