The Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the second half of their seasons with solid victories at ACC rival N.C. State Saturday.
The No. 11 Virginia men (5-1, 2-0 ACC) won 9 of 13 events and defeated the Wolfpack 155-81. In five events, the Cavaliers boasted top-three sweeps, all headed by freshmen. Luke Anderson led two of the sweeps with first-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle. The other sweeps came on first-place finishes by Ian Prichard in the 1,000 free, Gary Marshall in the 200 breaststroke and Luke Wagner in the 100 backstroke.
The Cav women (5-0, 2-0), also ranked 11th, won eight events, including three sweeps, and posted a 136-107 victory. Freshman Amy Baly helped secure the meet with wins in the 400 individual medley, 500 free, and 200 breast. Sophomore Cara Lane added her name to the winners' list with first-place finishes in the 200 free and 200 butterfly.

Students looking to attend the 2001 ACC Men's Basketball Tournament in Atlanta must apply at the Virginia athletic ticket office in Bryant Hall by Jan. 26, the Virginia Athletic Department announced. A payment of $224 should accompany each application.
The tournament will be held March 8-11 at the Georgia Dome.

Trout KiXX off
Virginia men's soccer senior midfielder-forward Ryan Trout was selected in the annual National Professional Soccer League draft Jan. 11. He was picked by the Philadelphia KiXX, the league's leading team.
This season, Trout finished his Virginia career with four assists and a goal. In his junior season, Trout earned second-team ACC honors and in 1998, led the Cavaliers with 28 points off of nine goals and 10 assists.
Four aces
The Virginia men's tennis coach Dick Stockton announced last week the Cavs have signed four players for the 2001-02 season.
The incoming recruiting class includes the 1999 individual Tennessee State Champion, Jay Curtis of Memphis, who is ranked No. 5 nationally in doubles. Curtis also boasts a 72-0 record at Memphis University High School.
Curtis will be joined by four-time All-State Stephen Nolen of Aurora, Colo., Chuck Perrin of Atlanta and Dillon Walker of Dallas.
