Cavs edge Seminoles at buzzer

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-The Virginia men's basketball team's trouble on the road almost continued Saturday at Florida State in a close game in which the Seminoles outplayed the Cavaliers in almost every aspect offensively.

But thanks partly to the heroics of Cavaliers Adam Hall and Roger Mason Jr. and partly to the mistakes of Seminole guard Monte Cummings, No. 12 Virginia (18-6, 7-6 ACC) pulled away at the last second with a 69-66 win.

With 25 seconds left to play, Florida State point guard Devlon Arrington, whose team was up by two, fouled Hall, a Cavalier forward. Hall, whose free throw average previously was only 60.4 percent, hit both of his shots to tie the game, 66-66.

Then, despite having all the time he needed on the shot clock, Cummings went for two with 13.2 seconds remaining instead of waiting for overtime. Mason blocked Cummings' shot, and Hall grabbed the rebound. Hall passed the ball off to teammate Donald Hand, who then gave it to Mason. With one second left, Mason hit his fourth three-pointer of the day to put Virginia up, 69-66.

The Seminoles (7-18, 6-7) missed their last-effort half-court shot, and left the Cavaliers on top with a victory that can be described only as lucky.
