The future of Virginia basketball will be on display Saturday at U-Hall - and not just in the Cavaliers' crucial conference game with Wake Forest. Before that 8 p.m. contest, the Blue Ridge School Barons and the Oak Hill Warriors will play at 3 p.m. in a prep game that showcases two top Virginia recruits.
The Barons (9-3) feature talented shooting guard Jermaine Harper, supported by Kahleaf Watson and David Popoola. Harper already has signed a letter of intent to play for Virginia for the 2001-2002 season.
"We have a very good team," Blue Ridge coach Bill Ramsey said. Jermaine's "our leader statistically and also from a leadership standpoint. He's our go-to guy at crunch time. He does a great job on defense as well."
Harper's prowess will be given a stern test against the Oak Hill Warriors (22-0), who enter the game ranked No. 1 in the USA Today prep basketball poll.
Oak Hill has produced many star college players, including Virginia sophomore center Travis Watson. Warrior guards Rashaad Carruth and Billy Edelin run this year's team, but all eyes are on 7-foot, 310-pound center DeSagana Diop. Recruited by Michigan, Florida, Miami (FL), North Carolina and Virginia, Diop has narrowed his list to UNC and Virginia but has said there are no clear favorites.
