Mason takes ACC Player of the Week award for Virginia

Roger Mason Jr., Virginia's sophomore shooting guard, garnered ACC Player of the Week honors for his outstanding play last week. In two key conference victories over Duke and Florida State, Mason scored 39 points and collected 11 rebounds while dishing out seven assists.

He connected on 13-of-25 shots from the field and all seven of his free throw attempts. In Virginia's 91-89 upset over the Blue Devils on Wednesday, Mason scored 20 points and tied a career high with seven rebounds.

    In the Cavaliers' second ACC contest of the week, Mason played a pivotal role in Virginia's 69-66 victory over the Seminoles by drilling a 22-footer with one second remaining. He was 6-for-8 from three-point range for the week, 4-for-4 against Florida State.

    Duke freshman Chris Duhon won the ACC Rookie of the Week award. Duhon averaged 17.5 points, three rebounds and three assists in the Blue Devils' games against Virginia on Wednesday and St. John's on Sunday.

    Duhon scored a career-high 20 points in Charlottesville off 7-for-8 shooting and followed that with 15 points against the Red Storm. He sank nearly 70 percent of his three-point attempts this week and shot 66.7 percent from the field.

    Back in the top 10

    The Virginia men's basketball team moved back into the top 10 and jumped three spots to No. 9 in the latest Associated Press poll.

    The Cavaliers' win over Duke dropped the Blue Devils one spot to 4th. Stanford became the new No. 1 team in the country after North Carolina's 75-65 loss to ACC cellar-dweller Clemson on Sunday pushed the Tar Heels back one spot to No. 2. Illinois claimed the No. 3 spot.

    Maryland fell three spots to No. 20 after losing to Florida State, 74-71, on Wednesday. Wake Forest rounded out the ACC contingent at No. 24, down from No. 23.

    Jumping for joy

    Virginia sophomore Naccole Guinn starred for the women's indoor track team this weekend by winning the ladies' triple jump in the ACC Indoor Championship held in Blacksburg. Her leap of 43 feet, 1 inches broke the Virginia triple-jump record and made her the first Cavalier to jump more than 43 feet indoors.

    The Cavalier women finished with 80 points and placed fourth overall behind North Carolina, Clemson and Georgia Tech. The men placed sixth with 68 points, 113 points behind first-place Clemson.

    Virginia's Curtrell Frye also competed in the triple jump and finished fourth. Eliese Mitchell placed third in the weight throw with a toss of 18.02 meters, while teammate Hilary Wilson finished seventh with a toss of 15.84.

    In the one-mile run, Cavaliers Jeanna Composti and Megan Schwartz crossed the finish line fifth and sixth, respectively. Kiamesha Otey placed fifth in the 60-meter dash and sixth in the 200, with times of 7.57 and 24.41 seconds, respectively.

    For the Virginia men, senior Bobby Theile of Charlottesville took seventh in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8 minutes, 27.46 seconds. His performance bested fellow Cavalier Matt Ruhl, who finished eighth in the event. Cary Chandler ran and jumped his way to a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing just before teammate Marion Mason, who placed fifth. In the mile, Steve Gross, Rob Pearce and Walton Kingsberry placed third, sixth and eighth, respectively. Bill Johnston placed seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 17.15.

    The track teams will compete next at the Last Chance Meet in Blacksburg on Saturday.

    Softball duo garners all-tourney honors

    Virginia junior pitcher/first baseman Kristen Dennis and sophomore third baseman Ruby Rojas earned spots on the All-Tournament Team after the women's softball team competed in the 24-team Triangle Classic Softball Tournament this weekend.

    The Virginia women lost to Tennessee in the championship game of the Gold Bracket by a score of 4-1. The Cavaliers finished the tournament with a 4-2 record with wins over Long Island, Elon, Wright State and Minnesota. Virginia returns to the field when they travel to Los Angeles for a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount on Thursday.
