Soccer players score national, regional spots

The Under-21 U.S. Women's National Team has extended Virginia women's soccer center midfielder Lori Lindsey an inviation to play with the team. Lindsey will travel to Chula Vista, California, to train with the team for a week later this month.

Lindsey, a junior co-captain, received 2000 ACC Player of the Year honors for her efforts this season after leading the Cavaliers with nine goals and three assists. Lindsey also was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American third team, the first time a Cavalier woman has been an All-American since 1998.

Freshman wing midfielder Erin Engelhardt and freshman goalkeeper Jodi Clugston were invited to play with the U.S. Youth Soccer Association Region I team. Both will travel to Las Vegas to participate in a tournament against other regional teams.

Engelhardt started 19 games and had four goals and three assists this season. Clugston started 11 games, two in the NCAA Tournament. She finished the season with 47 saves and a 1.54 goals-against average.

Grimes, Dykehouse earn ACC honors

Senior Jamie Grimes and freshman Carlie Dykehouse received ACC Men's and Women's Swimmers of the Week nods, respectively, for their performances in Virginia's dual meet victories over Maryland on Saturday.

    In his final collegiate dual meet, Grimes led the No. 11 Cavaliers to a 162.5-78.5 win with a first-place and personal-best finish in the 1000-yard freestyle and a second place finish in the 400 free.

    Dykehouse won both the 200 butterfly and 200 free, and swam a leg of the first-place 400 free relay team. With Dykehouse's help, the No. 12 Virginia women won the meet, 137-106.

    ACC preseason poll places softball third

    The ACC Preseason Softball Coaches Poll picked the Virginia softball team to finish third in the ACC this spring.

    Florida State unanimously was predicted to finish at the top of the conference this year. The Seminoles have taken home the ACC title for the last three consecutive years.

    The Cavalier squad finished last year's season with a 27-38 record and posted a 3-5 mark in the ACC. The team opens its season Feb. 16-18 at the UNC Triangle Classic in Raleigh, N.C.
