Wrestling drops meet to Virginia Tech

The Virginia wrestling team was out-muscled on the road Saturday and fell 27-13 to Virginia Tech. Soon after the start of the meet, Tech jumped to an insurmountable 24-7 lead to improve its record to 7-6-1. The Cavaliers fall to 5-7 on the year.

The Cavaliers were able to win only four bouts. P.J. Bory fought off late-charging Hokie Brent Rider en route to a narrow 6-4 decision in the 157-pound weight class. Sophomore Don Carlo-Clauss followed with a 15-7 major decision over Brian Wilson to give Virginia its only lead of the night.

Only after the Hokies clinched the dual meet with four consecutive wins did Virginia win its third match. Sophomore Josh Etu defeated Damian Hamelin in the heavyweight bout, 5-1. Cavalier freshman Ryan Stewart followed with a 14-9 win over former high school teammate David Thurston.

After Old Dominion handed down a slim 4-3 loss Wednesday, the Virginia women's tennis team came back strong against Princeton, 5-2, to notch its first victory in the spring season Saturday. The Cavaliers swept the three doubles matches before winning four of six in singles play.

    Hitting the Brakes

Members of the Florida State baseball team were shaken up Thursday afternoon after their bus driver suffered a heart attack while driving along Highway 101 in San Francisco. As the bus hurtled down the highway at 70 miles per hour with the driver slumped over the steering wheel, coaches were able to regain control and steer it to safety. None of the 35 players and coaches were injured in the incident.

The Seminoles were heading to eat lunch in downtown San Francisco around 1 p.m. when the coaches noticed that the driver was hunched over the steering wheel. The driver, an employee of Peninsula Charter Lines, could not be revived when he arrived at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco Medical Center. His identity has not been released. http://virginiasports.fansonly.com/sports/w-tennis/
