Softball takes tournament with victories over Bobcats

The Virginia softball team (8-6) snatched a doubleheader from Ohio (9-8) to take first place in the 2001 U.Va. Cavalier Classic at The Park on Saturday, 4-0, 7-4. Virginia finished with a perfect 4-0 tournament record, while Ohio dropped to 2-2.

The Cavaliers cruised to a 4-0 shutout in the first game behind the work of freshman pitcher Jessica Edwards, who struck out 10 and walked just three to bump up her record to 3-2 for the year. Junior first baseman Kristen Dennis and sophomore catcher Britt Gore helped fuel the offense with an RBI apiece.

In the second game, Dennis took the mound and led the Cavaliers to a win with 10 strikeouts and no walks. Virginia faltered slightly in the fifth inning and committed three errors, which allowed Ohio to tie the game 4-4. Senior right fielder Meaghan Young put the Cavaliers back on top for good in the sixth inning with a two-run triple.

A third day of tournament play was scheduled for Sunday, but the games were canceled because of bad weather.

Tennis falls to Harvard

In only its second loss of the year, the Virginia women's tennis team (8-2) fell to Harvard (2-2) in Boston on Sunday. The Crimson took two of three doubles matches and four of six singles matches as they defeated the Cavaliers, 5-2.

The absence of Virginia's No. 2 singles player Henriette Williams because of illness forced the Cavaliers to shuffle their lineup and play each athlete a spot ahead of her ordinary position. Senior Christie Schweer and sophomore Jennifer Tuchband took singles victories at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively.

In doubles competition, No. 2 pair Amy O'Donnell and Christine Kim jumped up to play at No. 1, while Schweer, Williams' usual partner, played at No. 2 with Laura James. Schweer and James pulled out an 8-4 victory to give Virginia its only doubles win.

ACC announces all-conference teams

The ACC named its all-conference basketball teams yesterday. Virginia's Travis Watson earned a spot on the second team, and Chris Williams and Roger Mason Jr. were on the third team.

Duke's Shane Battier and Jason Williams, North Carolina's Joseph Forte, Maryland's Juan Dixon and Georgia Tech's Alvin Jones comprise the first team. Battier, Williams and Forte were all unanimous choices, which marked the first time since 1961 that the Atlantic Coast Sports Writer's Association unanimously chose at least three players.
