Syracuse sticks men's lacrosse with first loss

The No. 3 Virginia men's lacrosse team lost at top-ranked Syracuse on Saturday, 13-7.

Although they took the first lead, the Cavaliers (1-1) were left down, 6-3, at the half.

In the third quarter Syracuse (2-0) took a definitive lead, 9-3, and then finished off the Cavaliers in the fourth quarter to take Virginia to a 13-7 loss that was its worst since the 1995 NCAA Semifinals when the Cavaliers lost to the Orangemen, 20-13.

The Cavaliers travel to No. 2 Princeton Saturday.

Baseball splits doubleheader

The Virginia baseball team split a doubleheader, 9-4 and 2-1, with Seton Hall on Saturday at the U.Va. Baseball Field.

The Cavaliers never overcame Seton Hall's 9-0 in the first game.

    In the second match the Pirates tied up the game, 1-1, on a throwing error by Virginia catcher Andrew Riesenfeld, who made the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh inning when he batted in Rueffert.

    Virginia was scheduled to play the Pirates a third time yesterday, but inclement weather forced the game to be canceled.

    Women's lax downs Syracuse

    The No. 7 Virginia women's lacrosse team took its first win of the season at No. 9 Syracuse with a 12-10 victory Saturday.

    Virginia goalkeeper Liz McCarthy had 12 saves and junior Mills Hook scored a game-high four goals and posted three assists.

    Francesca, Massey pin ACCs

    Virginia wrestlers Greg Francesca and Jimi Massey took the ACC Championship titles in their weight classes at the ACC Wrestling Championship this weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C.

    The Cavaliers took second as a team. with 73 points, only 5.5 points behind ACC Champion N.C. State.

    Francesca defeated Tim Marcantonio, 9-2, and Massey handed Jake Stork a 9-6 defeat. Both wrestlers went 2-0 in their class on the way to the title.
