Women's lacrosse squashes ODU

The Virginia women's lacrosse team spoiled Old Dominion's home opener with a 14-9 win last night.

After the Lady Monarchs (0-1) grabbed an early 2-0 lead, the Cavaliers (3-0) responded with seven unanswered goals to take a 7-2 lead early in the second half. Virginia senior Lacey Aumiller sparked the Cavalier run with four consecutive goals to close out the first half. She finished the night with five goals. Her sister Lauren Aumiller added two goals of her own for the Cavaliers.

Virginia senior midfielder Jamie Haas also scored a hat trick and had an assist. Seven different Cavaliers found the back of the net against the Lady Monarchs.

Suzanne Wosczyna led Old Dominion with five goals on six shots.

Sticking around

The Virginia men's lacrosse team found itself ranked sixth in the first USILA/STX men's lacrosse poll of the year. After opening their season with a win over No. 20 Towson on Feb. 24, the Cavaliers (1-1) suffered their first loss of the season against No. 1 Syracuse on Saturday, 13-7.

Virginia's next opponent, Princeton, is the second-ranked team in the poll. ACC foe Maryland rounds out the top three.

Award-winning women

The Associated Press named Duke senior guard Georgia Schweitzer the women's basketball ACC player of the year yesterday. Schweitzer beat out North Carolina's LaQuanda Barksdale to become the second women's ACC player of the year in Blue Devil history. She averaged 13.5 points per game this season.

Fellow Blue Devil Alana Beard also earned the ACC rookie of the year award by receiving 62 of 64 possible votes. She is the third Blue Devil to win the honor.

Florida State coach Sue Semrau also won the ACC coach of the year award.
