Contract extension gives Gillen another 10 years

According to ESPN.com, Virginia men's basketball coach Pete Gillen and the University are close to finalizing a contract extension, which will be announced by next week. The new contract, worth $9 million over 10 years, will replace the old contract, a seven-year deal. Gillen has four years remaining on the original contract.

At age 54, Gillen most likely will end his coaching career with the Cavaliers. Last season, he guided the Cavaliers to their first NCAA tournament appearance since 1997. Prior to coming to Virginia, he coached nine years at Xavier and four at Providence.

Former Cavs win in lacrosse World Cup

The United States, the top seed in the International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations World Cup Championships, shut out Germany, 18-0, in the Cup's quarterfinals yesterday. The U.S. team, which features five former Virginia players, defeated Australia on Sunday and Great Britain on Monday to earned the Cup's top seed after the completion of pool play.

Former Virginia stars Bonnie Rosen ('93), Kara Ariza ('98) and Cherie Greer ('94) and Virginia field hockey coach Jessica Wilk represent the United States on the playing field, and Virginia women's lacrosse assistant coach Heather Dow serves as an assistant coach on the U.S. team.

Ariza, Greer and Wilk all scored one goal each for the United States, and Rosen recorded two caused turnovers and three ground balls in the victory over Germany.

The United States faces Canada in the first semifinal today.

Scanlon joins Virginia rowing

The Virginia athletics department has appointed Katie Scanlon, former coach of the women's rowing team at New Hampshire, as an assistant coach for the Cavaliers.

Scanlon rowed throughout her collegiate years at New Hampshire before serving as a coaching intern at Harvard from 1992-93. She served as the head coach at her alma mater from 1996-98 when her team finished in the top three at the Champion International Regatta.

Scanlon was also a member of the U.S. Rowing Team from 1993-98.

Boozer plans to leave early

Like teammate Jason Williams, Duke men's basketball center Carlos Boozer is planning to graduate after next year. His hopes are to graduate one year early and turn pro, according to the Raleigh News & Observer. Boozer averaged 13.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last season.

After the 1999 season, the Blue Devils lost three players early to the NBA: Elton Brand, Corey Maggette and William Avery. However, two Duke players, sophomore Chris Duhon and transfer Dahntay Jones, are planning to complete all four years of their college eligibility, the News & Observer reported. Both have two years of eligibility left.
