Women's basketball splits pair of games in Chicago tournament

The Cavaliers finished 1-1 in this weekend's Roger and Mildred L. White Invitational at Northwestern, losing to No. 24 Houston Saturday at the buzzer, 67-64, and blowing out the host Wildcats, 76-55, yesterday.

Virginia led throughout yesterday's contest, as native Chicagoan Brandi Teamer had an impressive homecoming, dropping 24 points. Sophomore guard Brenna McGuire added 12 points and senior guard LaTonya Blue dished out six assists. Virginia also out-rebounded the Wildcats, 47-26. The victory improved the Cavaliers' record to 5-3 on the year.

On Saturday, junior forward Tiffany Sardin tied the game at 64 with just 40 seconds remaining, but Northwestern's Sancho Lyttle made a pair of free throws to give the Wildcats the lead. The Cavaliers got the ball back with eight seconds left, but had it stolen by wildcat Joann Overstreet, who made a free throw to put Northwestern up by three with only a second left on the clock.

Also a native of the Windy City, Sardin led the Cavaliers with 18 points. Senior forward Jocelyn Logan-Friend scored a career-high 16 points and pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds in the loss.
