Field hockey falls to Northwestern

Virginia's Katie Phillips scored twice for the Cavalier women's field hockey team in a 4-3 losing effort against Northwestern Sunday The aggressive Virginia offense outshot the Wildcats 25-15 and took more short corners (11-10). Despite the offense's superiority, the score remained tied at the end of regulation.

After one scoreless overtime period in which the Cavs again outshot the Wildcats (6-5), Northwestern's Ellen Schlafly scored off a rebound in the 94th minute, ending the hard-fought contest at 4-3.

The Cavaliers (2-3) look to turn things around Friday at 6 p.m. against James Madison University. Despite the sluggish start to the season, Virginia remains optimistic as four of its next five games will be played in Charlottesville.
