The Virginia men’s soccer team came from behind to secure a dramatic 2-1 double overtime victory against North Carolina State Thursday night.
The Cavaliers (9-6-2, 3-4-1 ACC) found themselves behind early in the game, their last of the regular season, but managed to equalize in the second half. They ultimately earned the hard-fought victory on freshman forward Darius Madison’s golden goal in the fourth minute of the second overtime period.
The Wolfpack (10-9-0, 1-7) got on the board first when freshman midfielder Connor Agnew scored off an assist from junior Alex Martinez in the 35th minute. N.C. State entered halftime with the 1-0 lead, despite Virginia’s 5-3 shot advantage in the first half.
The Cavaliers knotted the game in the 69th minute on a penalty kick after a Wolfpack defender inadvertently struck the ball with his hand in the box. Senior forward Will Bates calmly placed the ensuing penalty into the left corner of the net as N.C. State junior goalkeeper Fabian Otte guessed the opposite direction.
The contest remained tied at one goal apiece after the first of two 10-minute sudden death overtime periods.
The finisher came in the 104th minute when Virginia freshman defender Zach Carroll found Madison for the scintillating game-winning goal.
The Cavaliers will begin postseason play Tuesday against a yet to be decided opponent in the ACC Tournament’s first round.
