The Virginia men’s soccer team played host to Hofstra Tuesday night in what was a tough midweek matchup for the Cavaliers (5-2-3, 0-2-2 ACC). The Pride (6-4-1, 4-0 CAA) came in riding a four-game winning streak, outscoring their opponents 11-1.
Meanwhile, the Cavaliers were looking to get back to their winning ways after tying Virginia Tech in a scoreless double overtime affair last Friday.
The match started off slowly, with neither team scoring in the first half. Both teams continued to battle deep into the second half without either side gaining an edge.
Finally, with 11 minutes left in the second half, sophomore forward Edward Opoku continued his strong season and broke through to score the game-winning goal. Both sophomore midfielder Daniel Barir and sophomore midfielder Jean-Christophe Koffi were awarded assists on the play.
Virginia’s defense continued its recent string of dominant performances, keeping a clean sheet for the third consecutive match. Since a lopsided loss to Louisville, Virginia has outscored its opponents 5-0.
Virginia’s junior goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell had a solid performance with three saves.
Though both teams spent most of the match tied at 0-0, it was Virginia that played better offensively. The Cavaliers took 13 shots, compared to Hofstra’s eight. Virginia also had six shots on goal, compared to the Pride’s three. Lastly, the Cavaliers had a 4-1 advantage over the Pride in corner kicks.
Virginia will now look to continue its momentum and collect its first conference win, as they head to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on North Carolina Friday at 7 p.m.
