Newly-inaugurated Student Council President and third-year College student Sarah Kenny led the first Council meeting of her term Tuesday evening, where she laid out her plans for the Council and introduced new members to the procedures of their weekly meetings.
Since many of the meeting’s attendees were new to Student Council, Kenny and the new executive board members and committee chairs introduced themselves and explained how the weekly general body meetings function.
Kenny also took the opportunity to lay out a few changes she plans to make to the meetings, in particular her hope to introduce discussions about the University community as a whole.
“We are going to start compiling some ideas for broader conversations to have as a general body,” she said. “I want to give you all a chance to have some more macro-level conversations about what’s going on at the University.”
Kenny mentioned the upcoming University bicentennial, Thomas Jefferson’s legacy and free speech on college campuses as issues the Council could discuss.
Kenny also said the new leadership positions were still in transition, but should all be filled soon.
“Some of our positions are still vacant. Most of them have been filled at this point, but hopefully in the next few weeks, we will have a full leadership team, so you can expect some more concrete policy directives at the next meeting,” she said.
In a legislative session immediately before the general body meeting, representatives considered two bills, which proposed to amend the selection processes for various committees.
Since Student Council procedure requires amendments to bylaws to be voted on at least a week after they are introduced, both bills were tabled and will be voted on at next week’s meeting.
