On Monday, Feb. 4, junior guard Ty Jerome was named as one of the top 10 candidates for the 2019 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award.
The award recognizes point guards who have performed exceptionally well and have been successful throughout the season. Past winners include players like Villanova’s Jalen Brunson, Kansas’ Frank Mason III and Kentucky’s Tyler Ulis.
Jerome finds himself on the list after a starting of the season with numerous career-bests. The guard is averaging 13.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.7 steals a game. He has proven himself to be an elite passer with an incredible shooting range.
Additionally, Coach Tony Bennett has noted that Jerome has an incredibly competitive spirit that sets him apart. He’s recorded three 20-point games this season, including a career-high 25-point performance against South Carolina.
Jerome also had a notable performance against in-state foe Virginia Tech when he picked up his first career double-double after scoring 14 points and dishing out 12 assists. Last year, Jerome earned the honors of being selected to the All-ACC Third Team and being awarded the title of “Most Improved Player.”
The other candidates nominated this year are Gonzaga’s Josh Perkins, LSU’s Tremont Waters, Marquette’s Markus Howard, Michigan State’s Cassius Winston, Murray State’s Ja Morant, Nevada’s Cody Martin, Purdue’s Carsen Edwards, Tennessee’s Jordan Bone and Virginia Tech’s Justin Robinson.
Five finalists will be presented to Cousy and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee in March. Then, on April 12, the winner will be presented at the College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy’s in Los Angeles, Calif.
