The Virginia baseball team (23-18, 9-12 ACC) lost two games of a three-game home series against Florida State (24-14, 12-9 ACC) over the weekend at Disharoon Park.

Game 1: Florida State 14, Virginia 2

The Seminoles put up 14 runs on the Cavaliers Thursday night.

Florida State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Virginia freshman right-handed pitcher Mike Vasil, including a two-run homer by sophomore center fielder J.C. Flowers. An RBI groundout by sophomore designated hitter Brendan Rivoli in the bottom of the first scored sophomore shortstop Tanner Morris and made it 3-1.

However, Florida State scored 10 unanswered runs, going up 13-1 by the end of the seventh inning. The Seminoles scored two in the second, three in the fourth and five in the seventh. Vasil gave up Florida State’s first eight runs in 4.1 innings of work and was tagged with the loss.

The Cavaliers clawed one back in the top of the eighth, as Morris scored his second run of the day on an RBI groundout by freshman second baseman Nic Kent. However, Florida State scored one more run in the top of the eighth to finish the game with a 14-2 advantage.

Game 2: Florida State 5, Virginia 3

Friday’s game was postponed to Saturday due to rain, so the two teams played a doubleheader and Florida State took the first game 5-3.

The Cavaliers took first blood in the fourth on a two-out RBI single to left by junior catcher Logan Michaels.

Florida State then scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth to go ahead 5-1. In the eighth, senior first baseman Nate Eikhoff drove in one Virginia run with a sacrifice fly, then senior designated hitter Jack Weiller followed that up with a single to center to drive in another and bring Virginia within two.

Weiller went 4-for-4 Saturday afternoon — a career high. His four hits were half of Virginia’s team total for the game, and he was the only Cavalier with multiple hits.

The loss went to Virginia’s starter, junior right-handed pitcher Noah Murdock, for his fourth of the season. Murdock gave up three of Florida State’s runs in five innings, while sophomore left-handed pitcher Andrew Abbott gave up the other two.

Game 3: Virginia 13, Florida State 3

The Cavaliers won Saturday’s nightcap 13-3 to avoid the sweep, including four home runs.

Senior center fielder Cameron Simmons put Virginia on the board first with a two-run homer to right in the third inning. In the fifth, Simmons then hit an RBI single to score Morris and scored on an infield single by Weiller, putting Virginia ahead 4-0.

Virginia would go on to score five runs total in the fifth after a three-run homer to left by sophomore right fielder Alex Tappen. Tappen finished the day with two hits, two runs scored and four runs batted in.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Griff McGarry started the game on the mound for the Cavaliers and gave up only a single hit in five innings of work, striking out eight batters.

Florida State made it 7-1 in the top of the sixth, but Morris hit a solo shot to left in the bottom of the frame to go back ahead by seven.

The Cavaliers added four runs in the seventh inning, including an RBI single by Tappen. Virginia scored their final run in the eighth on a solo shot by Eikhoff, who would finish the day with three hits, a homer, an RBI and three runs scored.

Virginia will next play against Liberty at home Tuesday evening.
