No. 1 Virginia will face No. 16 Virginia Tech at home Thursday. The Cavaliers (8-0-1, 0-0-1 ACC) look to improve their 15-4-1 record against the Hokies (9-0-0, 1-0-0 ACC) following a disappointing upset in 2018.
Virginia has fallen to Virginia Tech only four times in program history, most recently in 2018 when the unranked Hokies produced a 1-0 shutout over the then-No. 6 Cavaliers. Prior to 2018, Virginia had not conceded a match to the team since the ACC semifinals in 2013, which was the last year Virginia Tech had advanced to the NCAA tournament.
The Cavaliers seek their first conference victory after a draw against Wake Forest in the ACC opener Sept. 20. Virginia started the season with eight straight victories, including six shutouts, and has racked up 36 goals and conceded only four.
Ranked first in the ACC, the Hokies enter the match coming off a nine-game winning streak, including a 2-0 win over Miami in their ACC opener Sept. 20. Senior goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn currently ties Virginia Tech’s record for career shutouts with 29, conceding just two goals this season.
The Cavaliers should remain confident offensively as they prepare to face the Hokies. Virginia is led by offensive stars senior forward Meghan McCool, sophomore forward Alexa Spaanstra and sophomore forward Rebecca Jarrett. The Cavalier defense has been consistent in forcing turnovers but will be tested by the ranked Hokies, who have put 115 shots this season.
