In the St. Patrick’s Day matchup between Virginia and Towson, the Cavaliers (8-8, 2-7 ACC) had more than luck — they had pitchers who handed the Tigers (2-13, 0-0 CAA) 10 strikeouts, batters who plated five runs and fielders who yielded 27 putouts.
It took five trips to the plate for Towson to record a hit — which, little to their knowledge, would be the only one of the day for the team. This is thanks to the impressive Virginia pitching squad and some solid defensive efforts by the Cavaliers, especially graduate catcher Logan Michaels.
“That was an outstanding effort on the part of our pitching staff,” Coach Brian O’Connor said. “It was a collective effort ... so it was great to see them all go out and pitch, really, really well.”
Graduate right-hander Paul Kosanovich was credited with the win as he pitched three scoreless innings. Junior right-hander Zach Messinger, junior left-hander Billy Price, senior right-hander Kyle Whitten and graduate right-hander Stephen Schoch all got the chance to take the mound as well, and all four of them returned each Tiger hitter to the dugout.
Virginia’s defense also helped out quite a bit. Michaels made two big plays — he stopped a Towson attempt to steal third base and at one point, hopped over a batter in front of the plate, tagged him and then threw an out to third.
On the offensive side, senior outfielder Brendan Rivoli batted two RBI and gave the Cavaliers a 4-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. The other run came from freshman catcher Kyle Teel who doubled to the right side in the sixth inning.
The Cavaliers will hope to keep their winning energy this weekend against a tough opponent — No. 18 Pittsburgh. The three-game series will begin Saturday at 1 p.m. and be broadcasted on ACCNX.
