Swimming pulls out twin wins

The Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished their dual meet season with wins at Maryland on Saturday.

The No. 11 Cavalier men's team (8-1, 5-0 ACC) won 10 of 13 events to defeat the Terps 162.5-78.5. Virginia senior Jamie Grimes set a pool record and won the 1000-meter freestyle in 9 minutes, 6.08 seconds. Sophomore Dan DeMarco and freshman Ian Prichard took second and third in that race, respectively, to complete the Cavaliers' top-three sweep. Prichard also won the 200 and 500 free.

The No. 12 Virginia women (7-1, 4-1), led by sophomore Cara Lane, beat the Terps 137-106. Lane set a pool record in the 1000 free with a time of 9:47.72 and also took first place in the 500 free and second place behind freshman teammate Carlie Dykehouse in the 200 butterfly.

Senior Megan Iffland won the 200 backstroke. The Cavalier women also won the 400 free relay with a season's best time of 23:26.74.

The Cavalier swim and dive teams will return to the Aquatics & Fitness Center on Feb. 15 for the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships.

Virginia puts a hold on ODU Monarchs

Virginia wrestling won at Old Dominion, 24-12, in a dual match yesterday, posting its fifth dual match victory of the season and improving its record to 5-6 overall.

Cavaliers Jimi Massey, Zach Freday, Joe Alexander, Jason Bernd, Bob Seidel and Greg Francesca prevailed in their respective weight classes yesterday.

Old Dominion led by three at one point in the match with twin victories from Derrell Lorthridge and Charlie Busch, but Virginia grabbed wins in four of the next five matches to secure their victory.

The ODU win brought the Cavaliers back from a 24-12 defeat at the hands of North Carolina on Saturday in Chapel Hill, which had sunk Virginia to 1-2 in the ACC.

At Carolina, the Cavaliers posted victories from juniors Bob Seidel and Jimi Massey, and a medical forfeit in favor of junior Greg Francesca, but never pulled within less than eight points of the Tar Heels.

Carolina's win also counted as head coach Bill Lam's 350th career win.

Cavs' Vahaly ousted at Rolex tourney

Virginia senior Brian Vahaly lost the consolation semifinals at the Rolex Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Farmers Branch, Texas, on Saturday.

Vahaly's defeat came at the hands of UCLA's Jean-Julien Roger, who won 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Vahaly also lost in the consolation game in doubles, partnered with senior Huntley Montgomery.

The Cavaliers will kick off their 2001 spring season Feb. 17 when they travel to Old Dominion.
