Golfer advances at U.S. Amateur Championships

Virginia golfer Brad Tilley advanced in the 2005 U.S. Amateur Championships Wednesday after beating Jon-Michael Socaris in match play.

The senior, who shot a one-under 69 on the first day of the tournament, advanced Tuesday tied for 24th out of 210 amateur golfers.

Tilley's Cavalier teammate Carter Henderson, who was tied for 48th Wednesday, was eliminated in the first round of match play.

After beating Socaris, Tilley will play Korey Mahoney Thursday morning. The winner of that match will play later in the afternoon. The tournament will continue through Sunday at the Merion Golf Club outside Philadelphia.

Aside from his U.S. Amateur success, Tilley also was recently named to the 2005 All-State Golf Team by the Virginia Golf Coaches Association.
