The Virginia men’s soccer team suffered a tough road loss Saturday night, falling to Virginia Commonwealth 3-1. While the Cavaliers had 10 shots on goal compared to the Rams’ three, they failed to capitalize on their opportunities as VCU senior goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra, notched eight saves on the day to stifle the Cavaliers’ usually potent offensive attack.
Virginia drew first blood on a penalty kick from freshman midfielder Tony Tchani in the 38th minute, but the Rams responded quickly, converting on a cross from the left side to sophomore Evan Slusser only four minutes later. From that point onward, it was all VCU, as the Rams scored in the 75th minute to break the game open and added another in the 89th on an open-goal breakaway.
The loss leaves Virginia sitting at 2-3 on the year and fumbling for answers as it heads into its first ACC matchup of the season against N.C. State Friday at Klöckner Stadium.
