BERNSTEIN: Logical expectations

It is natural to wonder how, in the aftermath of a tragedy, we may have prevented the event — but we must approach such a question rationally, and it appears to me that many have allowed their emotional reaction to overwhelm their ability to reason.

Opinion

Scale of one to ten

Though course evaluations are not a good measure of whether a professor deserves a tenured position, they still give students a sense of efficacy and give professors an opportunity to make valuable improvements to their courses.

Opinion

HARRINGTON: Illegal contact

Hopefully, a first-year aware of the policy would realize the upperclassmen girls who have not talked to her much are still fellow students concerned about her, and likely willing to offer advice on how late busses operate, calling SafeRide, getting a cab or dealing with more dire situations

Opinion

KHAN: An end to “slacktivism”

Not only does Buddies on Call fill in the very dangerous gap of safe transportation availability during weekends, but it is also a group formed entirely by student initiative.

Opinion

Interest rates

Though it does make sense to prioritize the students who most want to attend, this measure is impossible to objectively quantify.

Opinion

BOYNTON: Together we rally

I believe the University must be transparent and honest with regards to the problems we all face here, and directly address an endemic problem of gender-based violence.

Opinion

Ranting and raving

Rave venue owners should not be discouraged from distributing educational materials and preparing for emergency medical situations in order to make their events safer.

Opinion

WHISNANT: The people’s Board

Allowing students the option of coming to talk directly to the Rector and the Board as whole would bring the University meaningfully closer to the Jeffersonian ideal of civic engagement.

Opinion

HORNE: Defy the statistics

Celebrities have even participated in the outcry for fair treatment of women across the United States. It has taken some time, but colleges all across the nation are beginning to follow suit.

Opinion

KELLY: Scrolling into the future

As college libraries begin to transition into an increasingly digital age, questions will arise as to the role traditional print resources will play in a library of the future.

Opinion

An inclusion illusion

Admitting women to social fraternities is not a guaranteed remedy to the problems plaguing fraternity life — namely: sexual assault, alcohol abuse and hazing.

Opinion

PATEL: Employing your mind

Different questions apply to different situations, and coming up with the right questions requires those same critical thinking skills that are called for in heuristic tasks.
